Women's Nordic team dominates the 5K Freestyle at Williams





WOODFORD, Vt. - The Bates women's Nordic team had a dominant performance in the 5K Freestyle today at the Williams Winter Carnival. The Bobcats placed three women in the top-thirteen out of 65 racers.

Juniors Natalie Ruppertsberger (Plainfield, N.H.) and Kristen Gill (Jackson, N.H.) led the Bobcats with two top-ten finishes. Ruppertsberger raced to a 7th-place finish, with Gill right behind her in 10th-place. Sophomore Beth Taylor (Norwich, Vt.) also had a strong race, claiming 13th-place in a time of 15:11.6.

On the men's side, first-year Lucas Milliken was the top finisher for the Bobcats in 29th-place out of 63 skiers, in a time of 28:13.6. Seniors Brandon Cooper (Aspen, Colo.) and Harry Poole (Yarmouth, Maine) rounded out the top three finishers for Bates, placing 40th and 47th respectively.

The combined Bates Nordic and alpine teams finished in seventh place out of 12 teams with 502.0 points. The Bobcats held on to a slight lead over St. Lawrence University, who finished the carnival with 496.0 points.

Poole had his best finish of the season in the Men’s 10K Classic at the Williams College Winter. The carnival has been dubbed the Van"cow"ver Carnival, as it is taking place during with this year’s Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Canada.


Poole, the lone captain on the men’s squad, placed 14th out of 63 racers, with a time of 30:44.9, to lead the Bobcats. Cooper also had a great race, placing 20th in a time of 31:00.5. First-year Daniel Kuzio (Moretown, Vt.) rounded out the top three finishers for the Bobcat men, with a 32nd place finish in a time of 31:43.4.


In the Women’s 5K Classic, three Bobcats finished in the top twenty-five for a tremendous start to the Williams Carnival. Ruppertsberger has been the first Bates women’s finisher in each race this season and her streak continued today. Ruppertsberger nabbed 12th place out of 70 skiers with a time of 17:23.2. Senior captain Abby Samuelson (Freeport, Maine) looked strong in 21st place with a time of 17:37.0, while first-year Gretchen Sellegren (Bozeman, Mont.) slid into the top-25 with a 24th place finish, in a time of 17:54.9.
