RIPTON, Vt. -- The Bates men's Nordic ski team recorded a season-best fifth-place showing among nine teams in the Men's 3x3x1 Freestyle Sprint Relay on Saturday at the Middlebury Carnival.

Bates' Nordic and alpine teams combined to score 482 points, not far behind seventh-place St. Lawrence (504.5) and well ahead of Harvard for eighth place among 12 teams in the carnival.

The Bates men scored 77 points, trailing only Dartmouth, Vermont, New Hampshire and Williams in the event.

First-year Jordan Buetow (Fairbanks, Alaska), first-year Alex Hamilton (Truckee, Calif.) and sophomore Lucas Milliken (North Yarmouth, Maine) completed the race in 27:23.2, just 1.2 seconds behind Williams (27:22.0).

The Bates women were eighth out of 10 participating teams, with the trio of senior Kirsten Gill (Jackson, N.H.), junior Beth Taylor (Norwich, Vt.) and senior Meg McClelland (Keene Valley, N.Y.) finished the race in 34:26.0.

Bates hosts the NCAA East Regional Championship next weekend, Feb. 25-26, at its two home venues: Black Mountain in Rumford (Nordic) and Sunday River in Newry (alpine).
