Men's Nordic takes fifth place in sprint relay at Middlebury Carnival







RIPTON, Vt. -- The Bates men's Nordic ski team recorded a season-best fifth-place showing among nine teams in the Men's 3x3x1 Freestyle Sprint Relay on Saturday at the Middlebury Carnival.

Bates' Nordic and alpine teams combined to score 482 points, not far behind seventh-place St. Lawrence (504.5) and well ahead of Harvard for eighth place among 12 teams in the carnival.

The Bates men scored 77 points, trailing only Dartmouth, Vermont, New Hampshire and Williams in the event.

First-year Jordan Buetow (Fairbanks, Alaska), first-year Alex Hamilton (Truckee, Calif.) and sophomore Lucas Milliken (North Yarmouth, Maine) completed the race in 27:23.2, just 1.2 seconds behind Williams (27:22.0).

The Bates women were eighth out of 10 participating teams, with the trio of senior Kirsten Gill (Jackson, N.H.), junior Beth Taylor (Norwich, Vt.) and senior Meg McClelland (Keene Valley, N.Y.) finished the race in 34:26.0.

Bates hosts the NCAA East Regional Championship next weekend, Feb. 25-26, at its two home venues: Black Mountain in Rumford (Nordic) and Sunday River in Newry (alpine).

Beth Taylor finished 12th out of 61 competitors on Friday in the 10K Freestyle race at the Middlebury Carnival, leading the Bates women's Nordic ski team. Taylor (Norwich, Vt.) finished the Rikert Touring Center course in 30:40.9, good for her second-highest showing of the carnival season to lead the Bobcats, who were without senior stalwarts Natalie Ruppertsberger (Plainfield, N.H.), who didn't race, and Gill, who didn't finish.

Meg McClelland came in 33rd in 31:54.8, and first-year Andrea Fisher (Williamstown, Mass.) took 41st at 32:54.1, half a second ahead of sophomore Gretchen Sellegren (Bozeman, Mont.), who was 42nd.

Jordan Buetow led the men's Nordic team for the eighth time in as many races this season, placing 33rd out of 59 racers in the men's 10K Freestyle race, with a time of 27:35.3. Lucas Milliken came in 50th and Alex Hamilton was 53rd.
