CARRABASSETT VALLEY, Maine -- The Bates women's Nordic ski team finished fourth out of 10 squads for the second straight day on Saturday in the 3x6.6-kilometer freestyle relay at the Colby Carnival.
Bates' alpine and Nordic teams combined for a score of 509 points, good for seventh place out of 12 teams at the carnival.
Bates' veteran trio of senior Kirsten Gill (Jackson, N.H.), junior Beth Taylor (Norwich, Vt.) and senior Megan McClelland (Keene Valley, N.Y.) finished the relay in 1:10:10.1, close behind winner Dartmouth, New Hampshire, Vermont and Dartmouth again.
The Bates men were eighth out of 11 squads in the men's relay, led by the 12th-place trio of first-years Jordan Buetow (Fairbanks, Alaska), Alex Hamilton (Truckee, Calif.) and Peter Cowan (Bethel, Maine), who finished in 56:38.5.
Bates gets to compete at its home venue next week, Black Mountain in Rumford, for the fifth annual Chummy Broomhall Cup, also known as the Maine Collegiate Championship. The Bobcats return to the EISA carnival circuit on Feb. 4-5 for the UVM Carnival at Stowe, Vt.
Senior Natalie Ruppertsberger (Plainfield, N.H.) finished sixth out of 91 competitors in the women's 15K Classical race on Friday at the Colby Carnival, leading the Bates women's Nordic ski squad to fourth place out of 10 teams in the event. Ruppertsberger finished the race in 41:27.3. Kirsten Gill and Beth Taylor were 20th and 22nd, respectively, in 42:32.0 and 42:45.1.
The Bates men's Nordic team followed the lead of Buetow, who placed 33rd out of 82 skiers with a time of 34:40.8. Alex Hamilton came in 42nd in 35:09.5, and Peter Cowan was 50th at 35:36.6.
