Women's Nordic fourth out of 14 in 10K Freestyle at St. Lawrence





LAKE PLACID, N.Y. -- Senior Kirsten Gill (Jackson, N.H.) and junior Beth Taylor (Norwich, Vt.) finished sixth and seventh, respectively, out of 72 competitors on Saturday in the 10K Freestyle women's race at the St. Lawrence Carnival, leading the Bates Nordic ski team's impressive day.

Sophomore Gretchen Sellegren (Bozeman, Mont.) came in 16th for Bates women, who placed fourth out of 14 teams in the event with 98 points.

Bates' combined alpine and Nordic ski teams took eighth place out of 14 teams overall at the carnival, with 480 points, close behind Colby (496).

First-year Jordan Buetow (Fairbanks, Alaska) led the men's squad for the second time in as many days, placing 40th among 68 competitors in the men's 15K Freestyle. First-year Alex Hamilton (Truckee, Calif.) was 44th and first-year Sean Woods (Gypsum, Colo.) was 45th.

Bates heads to nearby Sugarloaf for next weekend's Colby Carnival.

Senior Natalie Ruppertsberger (Plainfield, N.H.) placed seventh overall out of 77 competitors in the women's 6K Classical race, highlighting the Bobcats' first day of the St. Lawrence Carnival, the opening weekend of the EISA circuit.

Ruppertsberger, a two-time competitor in the NCAA Championship, finished her first race of the season in a time of 19:34.6 to score 37 team points.

Fellow senior captain Megan McClelland (Keene Valley, N.Y.) placed 34th for Bates in a time of 20:39.8. Beth Taylor came in 37th, in 20:42.8.

Jordan Buetow led the men's squad with a 42nd-place showing, crossing the finish line in the 10K Classical in 29:33.3. Alex Hamilton placed 49th in 29:54.1 and Sean Woods was 54th in 30:17.5.
