Women's Nordic team dominates Broomhall Cup







RUMFORD, Maine -- Seniors Natalie Ruppertsberger and Kirsten Gill finished first and second, respectively, to lead the Bates women's Nordic ski team to first place out of five teams on Sunday at the fifth annual Chummy Broomhall Cup, also known as the Maine Collegiate Championship, held at the Bobcats home site of competition, Black Mountain.

The Bates women overwhelmed the field low score of 9 points in the women's 10K Classic Mass Start race. The Bates men were third out of five teams with 35 points in the mens' 10K Classical Mass Start race, and the combined squads placed third overall.

Ruppertsberger (Plainfield, N.H.) covered the course in 32:18.3. Gill (Jackson, N.H.) trailed only her fellow team captain, posting identical intervals of 16:22 for a final time of 32:45.2.

Bates first-year Andrea Fisher (Williamstown, Mass.) placed sixth in 34:10.2. Also among the top 13 were Bates senior captain Megan McClelland (Keene Valley, N.Y.) in eighth, sophomore Samantha Forrest (Bozeman, Mont.) in 12th and first-year Caroline Daniels (Minneapolis, Minn.) in 13th.

On the men's side, first-year Jordan Buetow (Fairbanks, Alaska) led his teammates, as he has all season so far, with a 10th-place finish of 29:44.7 out of 32 competitors. Junior Jimmy Burnham (Carlisle, Mass.) was close behind in 11th at 29:47.9, while first-year Peter Cowan (Bethel, Maine) and first-year Alex Hamilton (Truckee, Calif.) were 14th and 15th, respectively. Also among the top 20 in the race were sophomore Lucas Milliken (North Yarmouth, Maine) in 17th, sophomore Dan Kuzio (Moretown, Vt.) in 18th and first-year Sean Woods (Gypsum, Colo.) in 19th.

The Bobcats return to the EISA carnival circuit this weekend, Feb. 4-5, for the UVM Carnival at Stowe, Vt.
