STOWE, Vt. -- Bates sophomore Jordan Buetow came in fifth out of 68 skiers in the men's 10K freestyle race, while senior Beth Taylor finished seventh among 71 competitors in the women's 5K freestyle race, to lead the Bates men's and women's Nordic ski teams on Friday at the Dartmouth Winter Carnival.
Buetow (Fairbanks, Alaska) notched his fourth top-10 finish out of four freestyle carnival races this season. Buetow skated the course in 26:33.7. Junior captain Lucas Milliken (North Yarmouth, Maine) finished 18th in 27:37.3, and senior Jimmy Burnham (Carlisle, Mass.) rounded out the team scoring in 39th at 28:27.7, just 0.6 seconds ahead of first-year teammate Nick Michaud (Fort Kent Mills, Maine).
Taylor (Norwich, Vt.) submitted her second top-10 carnival performance of the season, surging through the 5K course in 14:25.1. First-year Hallie Grossman (South Woodstock, Vt.) came in 29th in 15:17.5, and junior Gretchen Sellegren (Bozeman, Mont.) was 34th in 15:29.5.
Bates' combined alpine and Nordic ski teams have 262 carnival points halfway through the weekend, good for a tie for fifth place with Williams among 15 teams.
The Dartmouth Winter Carnival continues Saturday morning at Trapp Family Lodge, to where the Nordic events were moved from the originally scheduled site, Oak Hill in New Hampshire.
