STOWE, Vt. — First-year Hallie Grossman led the Bates women's Nordic ski team for the second straight day, and sophomore Jordan Buetow finished in sixth place to highlight the men's 10K freestyle race to highlight the third and final day of the UVM Winter Carnival for Bates on Sunday.
The Bobcats' combined alpine and Nordic ski teams placed fifth among 15 teams in carnival scoring, trailing only Dartmouth, Vermont, Middlebury and New Hampshire.
Grossman (South Woodstock, Vt.) placed 13th out of 77 competitors in the women's 10K freestyle race at Trapp Family Lodge, a day after coming in 12th out of 77 in the 5K classic race. Senior Beth Taylor (Norwich, Vt.) was close behind in 15th (30:05.1), and senior Kelsey Dion (Truckee, Calif.) rounded out the women's squad's scoring in 47th (33:02.7).
Buetow (Fairbanks, Alaska) continued his outstanding season as the sixth finisher among 73 skiers overall, and fifth among NCAA competitors, in the men's 10K freestyle, with a time of 25:10.8. Junior captain Lucas Milliken (North Yarmouth, Maine) had a big day at 16th place in 26:00.1, and sophomore Sean Woods (Gypsum, Colo.) was 39th in 26:50.1.
Grossman placed 12th out of 77 skiers on Saturday in the Women’s 5K Classic race at the UVM Winter Carnival, leading the Bates Nordic ski teams in their first day of action at the carnival.
Grossman finished the race in 16:50.7, edging Vermont’s Caitlin Curran by 2.7 seconds for 12th place. Taylor finished 22nd in 17:13.4, and sophomore Caroline Daniels (Minneapolis, Minn.) came in 55th in 19:29.7.
Sophomore Alex Hamilton (Truckee, Calif.) paced the men’s team with a 39th-place showing among 73 skiers in the men’s 10K classic race, with a time of 31:14.5. Milliken was 41st in 31:17.1, followed by senior Jimmy Burnham (Carlisle, Mass.) in 46th (31:28.7).
Bates competes at the Dartmouth Carnival next weekend at Oak Hill.
