Taylor leads women's Nordic to fourth in Dartmouth 15K

STOWE, Vt. -- Bates senior Beth Taylor (Norwich, Vt.) took ninth place out of 71 skiers for her second top-10 finish in as many days, with a time of 49:14.7, to lead the Bobcat women's Nordic squad to the fourth-most carnival points out of 11 teams in the women's 15K classic mass start race Saturday at the Dartmouth Winter Carnival.

First-year Hallie Grossman (South Woodstock, Vt.) was second for the Bobcats for the second straight day, in 15th at 50:39.9, and junior Gretchen Sellegren (Bozeman, Mont.) was third on the Bobcats for the second straight day, in 32nd at 52:34.5.

Junior captain Lucas Milliken (North Yarmouth, Maine) led the Bates men in 14th place overall, with a time of 1:00:28.7. Sophomore Jordan Buetow (Fairbanks, Alaska) recorded his best classic race of the season, in 27th place out of 68 overall in the men's 20K classic mass start, with a time of 1:01:18.4. Sophomore Sean Woods (Gypsum, Colo.) was 31st in 1:01:58.4.

Bates' combined Nordic and alpine teams scored 519 points to finish sixth out of 15 teams at the Dartmouth Carnival. Bates has the Williams Carnival next weekend at Prospect Mountain.

Buetow came in fifth out of 68 skiers in the men’s 10K freestyle race, while Taylor finished seventh among 71 competitors in the women’s 5K freestyle race on Friday.

Buetow notched his fourth top-10 finish out of four freestyle carnival races this season, skating the course in 26:33.7. Milliken finished 18th in 27:37.3, and senior Jimmy Burnham (Carlisle, Mass.) rounded out the team scoring in 39th at 28:27.7, just 0.6 seconds ahead of first-year teammate Nick Michaud (Fort Kent Mills, Maine).

Taylor submitted her second top-10 carnival performance of the season, surging through the 5K course in 14:25.1. Grossman came in 29th in 15:17.5, and Sellegren was 34th in 15:29.5.
