CRAFTSBURY, Vt. -- Senior Beth Taylor (Norwich, Vt.) finished sixth out of 71 competitors in the women's 10K Classic race, to lead the Bates Nordic ski teams on what became the one and only day of competition at the Williams Winter Carnival.
Friday's Nordic competition, originally scheduled for Williams' home site of Prospect Mountain, was cancelled, moving the 10K classic races to Craftsbury Outdoor Center on Saturday, and causing those races to count double in team carnival scoring. Bates' combined Nordic and alpine ski teams scored 434 points to tie Colby for seventh place among 16 teams at the carnival.
Taylor notched her second top-six performance of the season, and her best classical technique showing of the year, with a time of 31:43.9. First-year teammate Hallie Grossman (South Woodstock, Vt.) finished 20th in 33:29.9, and junior Gretchen Sellegren (Bozeman, Mont.) was 38th in 34:39.3 to round out the scoring for the Bates women, allowing the squad to tie Middlebury for the fourth-most points in the field of 13 teams.
Junior captain Lucas Milliken (North Yarmouth, Maine) led the Bates men in 28th place among 70 competitors in the men's 10K classic, with a time of 28:40.1. Sophomore Jordan Buetow (Fairbanks, Alaska) took 41st place in 29:22.3, and sophomore Alex Hamilton (Truckee, Calif.) was 45th in 29:36.0.
The carnival season wraps up next weekend with the NCAA East Regional Championship at the Middlebury Winter Carnival, with Nordic races held at Rikert Touring Center in Ripton, Vt.
