WATERVILLE, Maine -- Sophomore Hallie Grossman finished out of the top 10 for the first time this season, but still came in an impressive 12th place out of 97 skiers on Sunday, as the Colby Carnival concluded with freestyle mass start races at Quarry Road Recreation Area.
Following Sunday's Nordic races, Bates' combined alpine and Nordic ski teams finished fifth among 16 teams, their second consecutive fifth-place showing. With 524 points, Bates was well ahead of sixth-place St. Lawrence (453), as well as Williams (414) and Colby (386).
Grossman (South Woodstock, Vt.), an NCAA Championship participant as a rookie last year, finished the 15-kilometer course in 44:45.7, 1.2 seconds behind Dartmouth's Megan Killigrew. First-year Margaret Pope (McCall, Idaho) was close behind in 15th at 45:07.5, followed in Bates' scoring by senior captain Gretchen Sellegren (Bozeman, Mont.) in 21st at 46:56.3.
The Bates men placed sixth as a group for the second straight day in the men's 20K freestyle race, with junior Jordan Buetow (Fairbanks, Alaska), junior Sean Woods (Gypsum, Colo.) and senior captain Lucas Milliken (North Yarmouth, Maine) placing 19th, 24th and 25th, respectively, in 49:04.1, 49:53.7 and 50:01.6.
Bates travels to Stowe, Vt., next weekend for the Nordic portion of the UVM Carnival, taking place Feb. 2-3 at Trapp Family Lodge.
Grossman finished 10th overall to lead the Bates Nordic ski team in the first classical technique race of the year, finishing the 5K course in 18:16.3, nudging Dartmouth's same Killigrew by 0.9 seconds for 10th place among 103 competitors.
First-year Jane McLarney (Lowell, Mass.) placed 19th in 18:50.9 and Sellegren placed 23rd in 19:01.2, edging Williams' Hanna Smith by 0.4 seconds. The Bates women scored 74 carnival points, fourth-best among 13 squads in the event and trailing only New Hampshire, Dartmouth and Vermont.
Buetow led the Bates men's squad for the third time in as many races this season, placing 13th out of 95 competitors in the men's 10K classic race, timing in at 26:22.0. Junior Alex Hamilton (Truckee, Calif.) placed 27th in 27:08.8 and Milliken came in 32nd (27:22.5) to complete Bates' scoring, as the Bates men scored the sixth-most points among 13 squads in the event.
