Bates finishes sixth out of 16 teams at UVM Carnival

STOWE, Vt. -- Junior Jordan Buetow followed up his third-place performance at yesterday's 10K freestyle race with a 12th-place tie in the 10K classical technique race on Sunday as the UVM Carnival concluded.

With the alpine portion of the UVM Carnival completed Jan. 11-12, the final tally is in -- Bates' combined ski teams scored 501.5 points to place sixth out of 16 participating teams, just 18.5 points behind fifth-place Williams and 21.0 points ahead of seventh-place St. Lawrence.

Buetow (Fairbanks, Alaska) tied with Harvard's Chris Stock for 12th place among 69 men with his time of 28:57.1. Junior Alex Hamilton (Truckee, Calif.) came in 32nd at 29:49.5 and junior Sean Woods (Gypsum, Colo.) placed 34th in 29:52.3.

First-year Jane McLarney (Lowell, Mass.) led the Bates women's team in the women's 10K classic, placing 27th out of 75 skiers in a time of 35:24.0. Senior captain Gretchen Sellegren (Bozeman, Mont.) was 31st in 35:58.8 and sophomore Hallie Grossman (South Woodstock, Vt.) finished Bates' scoring in 32nd.

Bates' ski teams head to the Dartmouth Carnival Feb. 8-9, with Nordic races at Oak Hill in Hanover, N.H., and alpine races at Dartmouth Skiway in Lyme Center, N.H.

Saturday Recap

Buetow finished third out of 72 competitors on Saturday in the men’s 10K freestyle race at the UVM Carnival, earning the right to stand on his second podium in the past three weeks.

Buetow finished the course in 25:12.1, trailing only Scott Patterson of Vermont and Sam Tarling of Dartmouth. At the St. Lawrence Carnival two weeks ago, he was second in the men’s 3K prologue freestyle race.

Senior captain Lucas Milliken (North Yarmouth, Maine) placed a career-best 10th, in 26:02.8, as the Bates men’s team finished third out of 13 squads in the event with 94 carnival points. First-year Corky Harrer (Minneapolis, Minn.) came in 29th to round out Bates’ scoring, in 26:46.1.

Grossman finished 20th in the women’s 5K freestyle to lead the Bates women to sixth place as a unit. Grossman timed in at 15:00.2, followed by Sellegren in 28th (15:13.4) and first-year Margaret Pope (McCall, Idaho) in 33rd at 15:23.0.
