LAKE PLACID, N.Y. -- Bates College junior Jordan Buetow (Fairbanks, Alaska) reached his first carnival podium on Saturday, claiming second place among 87 competitors in the men's 3K prologue freestyle race, as the St. Lawrence Carnival wrapped up at Mt. Van Hoevenburg.

Bates' combined alpine and Nordic ski teams scored 549.5 team carnival points, more than enough for fifth place among 16 teams there. Colby was sixth with 474.5. Bates last finished fifth at the 2012 UVM Carnival.

Buetow's time of 8:04.5 was second only to Vermont's Scott Patterson, and 2.0 seconds ahead of third-place Cole Morgen of UVM. With Sophomore Nick Michaud (Fort Kent Mills, Maine) and junior Sean Woods (Gypsum, Colo.) placing 22nd (8:19.5) and 29th (8:22.9), respectively, the Bates men's squad placed an outstanding third as a unit among 13 teams.

The Bates women's team also had a terrific day, placing fourth among 13 women's squads in the women's 3K prologue. Sophomore Hallie Grossman (South Woodstock, Vt.) had her second top-10 finish in as many days, taking 10th place out of 88 racers with a time of 9:29.3. First-years Margaret Pope (McCall, Idaho) and Jane McLarney (Lowell, Mass.) were 14th (9:35.2) and 19th (9:42.8), respectively, to finish Bates' scoring on the day.

Bates competes next weekend at the Colby Carnival, with Nordic events at Quarry Road Recreation Area in Waterville.
