LAKE PLACID, N.Y. -- Sophomore Hallie Grossman finished eighth overall and two first-year women placed 20th and 21st, respectively, leading the Bates women's Nordic ski team to fourth place among women's squads in the 15K freestyle race at the St. Lawrence Carnival at Mt. Van Hoevenburg on Friday.
Junior Jordan Buetow (Fairbanks, Alaska) also posted a strong start to the 2013 campaign, finishing 11th among 87 collegiate skiers in the men's 20K freestyle race, as the Bates men scored the fifth most points among men's squads in the event. Sophomore Sean Woods (Gypsum, Colo.) came in 29th in 51:35.0, while first-year Corky Harrer (Minneapolis, Minn.) rounded out Bates' scoring in 41st place at 52:32.4, just ahead of junior Alex Hamilton (Truckee, Calif.) in 42nd at 52:35.3.
Grossman (South Woodstock, Vt.), whose outstanding rookie season culminated in her appearance at the 2012 NCAA Championships, covered the course in 42:33.8, eighth best among 85 competitors. Following her in Bates' scoring were first-year Jane McLarney (Lowell, Mass.) in 20th at 44:30.6 and first-year Margaret Pope (McCall, Idaho) in 21st at 44:38.8. Junior newcomer Gabby Naranja (Fort Kent, Maine) came in 32nd overall in 45:30.7.
Bates' combined Nordic and alpine teams are in fifth place among 16 teams after the first day of the carnival, which continues Saturday with alpine slalom races and Nordic classical technique races.
