Nordic teams eighth, ninth in Middlebury classical races

RIPTON, Vt. -- Sophomore Hallie Grossman placed 23rd out of 70 skiers in the women's 5K classical technique race on Friday at the Middlebury Carnival, leading the Bates women's Nordic team to eighth place among 13 teams in the event.

Grossman (South Woodstock, Vt.) finished the course at Rikert Touring Center in 27:23.8. Senior captain Gretchen Sellegren (Bozeman, Mont.) placed 26th in 17:30.9, and first-year Jane McLarney (Lowell, Mass.) placed 35th in 17:45.5, rounding out Bates' scoring in the event.

Junior Jordan Buetow (Fairbanks, Alaska) led Bates in the men's 10K classic race, covering the course in 28:26.2 for 29th place among 69 competitors. Junior Sean Woods (Gypsum, Colo.) and senior captain Lucas Milliken (North Yarmouth, Maine) were close behind in 31st and 34th, respectively, at 28:28.7 and 28:33.3.

Bates' combined alpine and Nordic ski teams have 184 carnival points after Day 1, eighth-most among 16 teams, with alpine giant slalom and Nordic freestyle mass start races on the slate for Saturday's conclusion.
