Nordic women 4th, men 6th in classical races at Colby

WATERVILLE, Maine -- Sophomore Hallie Grossman finished 10th overall -- her third top-10 finish in as many carnival races this year -- to lead the Bates Nordic ski team in the first classical technique race of the year, Saturday at the Colby Carnival.

Grossman (South Woodstock, Vt.), an NCAA Championship participant as a rookie last year,  finished the course at Quarry Road Recreation Area in 18:16.3, nudging Dartmouth's Megan Killigrew by 0.9 seconds for 10th place among 103 competitors.

First-year Jane McLarney (Lowell, Mass.) placed 19th in 18:50.9 and senior captain Gretchen Sellegren (Bozeman, Mont.) placed 23rd in 19:01.2, edging Williams' Hanna Smith by 0.4 seconds. The Bates women scored 74 carnival points, fourth-best among 13 squads in the event and trailing only New Hampshire, Dartmouth and Vermont.

Junior Jordan Buetow (Fairbanks, Alaska) led the Bates men's squad for the third time in as many races this season, placing 13th out of 95 competitors in the men's 10K classic race, timing in at 26:22.0. Junior Alex Hamilton (Truckee, Calif.) placed 27th in 27:08.8 and senior captain Lucas Milliken (North Yarmouth, Maine) came in 32nd (27:22.5) to complete Bates' scoring, as the Bates men scored the sixth-most points among 13 squads in the event.

With Sunday's freestyle Nordic races remaining at the Colby Carnival, Bates' combined alpine and Nordic ski teams are in sixth place among 16 teams, with 381 points -- just a point shy of St. Lawrence.
