LEWISTON, Maine -- Bates College head coach of Nordic skiing Becky Woods '89 has announced the return to campus of Matt Dunlap '08, as the program's assistant coach.
A native of Farmington, Maine, and a graduate of Mt. Blue High School, Dunlap was a three-sport student-athlete at Bates in cross country, Nordic skiing and outdoor track and field. Dunlap captained both the cross country and Nordic teams as a senior. His senior season on the Bobcat cross country team yielded All-State, All-NESCAC and All-New England honors, and he represented Bates at the 2007 NCAA Division III Cross Country Championships.
After graduating from Bates, Dunlap spent a year coaching both cross country and track and field at Greely High School in nearby Cumberland, Maine, as well as the Nordic ski coach at North Yarmouth Academy.
He then moved on to the University of Alaska Fairbanks, where he served as assistant coach of the Nanooks Nordic ski team for three seasons and the cross country running teams for four seasons, including one year as the squad's head coach.
"I am thrilled to have Matt join us this season," said Woods. "He brings a level of coaching experience to the program that it is hard to find. I feel very fortunate to have him back on campus with us. His knowledge of the ski world and his ability to relate to the athletes will make him a great fit here. The fact that he is an alum is just another huge plus for the program."
Bates' Nordic and alpine ski teams open the Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association carnival season Jan. 17-18 at the Colby Carnival.
