Women 3rd, men 5th at New England Rowing Championships

WORCESTER, Mass. -- Bates College rowing had an impressive day Saturday at the New England Rowing Championships. Both the Bates women's and men's varsity eights qualified for their respective grand finals, where the women finished third in New England and the men placed fifth.

The Bates women's varsity eight placed second out of four boats in one of three preliminary heats, qualifying for the grand final with a time of 6:59.028. In the grand final, Bates finished behind only Trinity and Williams, the same two boats that finished ahead of Bates at the 2007 NCAA grand final, with a time of 6:53.348 beating out the likes of New Hampshire (6:54.000), Holy Cross and Coast Guard.

The men's varsity eight placed third in the second preliminary heat, at 6:05.641 close behind Williams (6:02.893) and Wesleyan (6:04.233). In the grand final the Bates men timed in 6:08.217, beating out Coast Guard (6:11.554) for fifth place, behind Trinity, Williams, Wesleyan and WPI. The Bates men's second varsity eight also made the grand final and placed fifth.

Bates returns to Worcester next Saturday for the ECAC Invitational. The regatta will be the season finale for the men, while the women will hope to continue on to the NCAA Championships for the second straight year.
