WORCESTER, Mass. -- Making their fall season debut, the Bates College women's rowing team claimed first place in the women's varsity 8 race for the second year in a row Sunday at the Quinsigamond Snake Regatta, beating out second-place Holy Cross by more than 35 seconds.
The women's time of 14:46.376 was the best in the 21-boat field, bettering the times of the top boats from the likes of Holy Cross (15:22.232), Wellesley (15:53.141), Tufts (15:58.083) and Colby (16:07.295). Bates also showed its depth as the Bates B boat finished ninth overall in 16:51.771 and the Bates C boat came in 14th at 17:18.451.
Meanwhile, the Bates men's crew made an impressive showing in their fall debut. The Bates A Varsity 8 finished with the second fastest time in a 21-boat field, just 0.9 seconds behind first-place WPI, but the boat was assessed a 1-minute penalty for accidentally being on the wrong side of a course buoy during the crew's warmup. The Bates men's B boat finished in ninth place as well (14:20.551), while the Bates C boat came in 17th at 15:21.409.
Bates' men's and women's crews will travel to the Head of the Charles this weekend, Oct. 18-19.
