WORCESTER, Mass. -- The Bates College men's and women's rowing teams both had a strong spring debut on Sunday in a regatta hosted by WPI in Worcester.
The women's varsity eight, ranked No. 3 in Division III, took first place out of five boats, covering the 2,000-meter course in 6:44.5, ahead of runner-up Mt. Holyoke (6:56.13) by over 11 seconds. Also in the race were Simmons, Wellesley and WPI. The women's second varsity eight also posted an impressive win, timing in 7:13.51 to beat runner-up Wellesley (7:19.94) as well as Mt. Holyoke and Simmons.
The Bates first men's varsity eight was a close second to WPI, 6:04.3 to 6:06.55. The men's second eight also competed in a close race, finishing third (6:28.67) behind WPI (6:23.83) and URI (6:27.94).
Bates will next compete with Tufts, Wesleyan and UNH next Saturday at Malden, Mass.
