Women's crew defeats rival Trinity in Worcester










WORCESTER, Mass. -- The No. 2-ranked Bates College women's varsity eight defeated rival and No. 3-ranked Trinity College by more than six seconds in their first matchup of the spring season on Saturday at Worcester, taking first place out of five boats.

Bates covered the 2,000-meter course in 6:47.68, followed by Trinity (6:53.99), New Hampshire, Vassar and Mills. Bates also topped Trinity in the women's second varsity race, 6:46.1 to 6:53.35, with New Hampshire coming in third. That race was shortened by about 50 meters due to a restart.

The Bates men's varsity, ranked No. 6 in the New England Rowing Championship coaches poll, also had an impressive day, finishing second out of five boats in 6:03.65, runner-up to Trinity (6:00.0) and nipping Ithaca (6:04.65) by a second and WPI (6:06.51) by less than three seconds. The Bates men's second varsity came in fourth out of five boats in their race.

The Bates women's first varsity eight is composed of Emily Chandler, Nicole Ritchie, Josie Cutts, Rebecca Waldo, Emma White, Ellen Patterson, Caitlin Murphy, Danica Doroski and coxswain Nora Collins.

The Bates men's first varsity eight is comprised of Cory Sanderson, Matthew Martone, Graham Pearson, Brian Quarrier, Glenn Kelly, James Grant, Charles Biddle, Brian Klein and coxswain Lindsay Thomson.

Bates will play host to Colby and Bowdoin tomorrow in the the CBB President's Cup at the Bates Boathouse in Greene.
