MEDFORD, Mass. -- The Bates College rowing teams got off to an excellent start to the spring regatta season on Saturday on the Malden River, with the men's team winning two of its three races and the Bates women winning all four of theirs.
The Bates women, ranked No. 3 in Division III by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association, saw its varsity eight win convincingly against Tufts, 7:03.39 to 7:29.71, and against Wesleyan, 7:06.34 to 7:21.23. The second varsity eight coasted past Wellesley (7:03.93 to 7:17.55) and Tufts (7:27.11 to 7:55.13).
The Bates men's first varsity eight, currently ranked No. 6 in New England, won easily over Tufts, 6:20.35 to 6:43.08, after a defeat at the hands of the University of New Hampshire (6:07.03 to 6:20.11). Bates' second varsity eight raced once, defeating Wesleyan convincingly, 6:28.46 to 6:49.49.
The Bates crews compete again on Sunday in Worcester, Mass., with the men competing against WPI and the University of Rhode Island, while the women race against WPI, Mt. Holyoke and Wellesley.
