Waldo a repeat CRCA All-American; five named national scholar-athletes

LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College women's rowing team placed one member on the 2010 CRCA Pocock Division III All-America First Team in junior Rebecca Waldo (Dracut, Mass.), the College Rowing Coaches Association announced on Thursday, as well as five members on the CRCA National Scholar-Athlete list.

Winning CRCA Scholar-Athlete honors -- for varsity letter-winning sophomores, juniors and seniors who have maintained a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or higher -- are sophomore Allison DiSalvo (Lowell, Mass.), senior Danica Doroski (Wayne, Pa.), sophomore Haley Sive (Glenville, N.Y.), senior Lindsay Thomson (West Hartford, Conn.) and junior Emma White (Bainbridge Island, Wash.).

Waldo becomes Bates' third rower ever to win multiple Pocock All-America awards during her career, along with two-time All-American Elizabeth Diamond '04 and three-time All-American Nicole Ritchie '09. Waldo was named to the Second Team in 2009.

Waldo rows in the sixth seat on Bates' first varsity eight, which has won 15 races against two losses in 2010 to earn the No. 4 spot CRCA/USRowing Division III poll. Bates competes in the the NCAA Division III Rowing Championships for the fourth straight year beginning Friday morning in Golden River, Calif.

"Becca really thrives in a sport like rowing, where work ethic and camaraderie are paramount," said Bates head coach Peter Steenstra. "She suffered an injury in the early spring that set her back a bit in her training, but didn’t affect her competitive nature. She continued to attend every practice to do the work she was able to do and to support her teammates. By the time she was cleared for full training, she was in the First Eight before the end of the week. She is a tenacious athlete on the water but a pleasant and engaging person on land."

Selection criteria for earning CRCA All-America honors include strength of schedule, regular season record, end of season regatta results, nomination rank, coaches' comments and 2,000-meter erg score.
