Bates crews win three races in Worcester

WORCESTER, Mass. -- The Bates women's rowing team won a close race against two top rivals, highlighting a day of three first-place finishes and two second-place showings on Sunday at Lake Quinsigamond, as the Bobcats competed against WPI, Wellesley, Trinity, Holy Cross, Rochester and the University of Rhode Island. It was the Bobcats' second regatta in as many days.

Bates' nationally third-ranked varsity eight (WV8) edged fifth-ranked Trinity by half a second for first place out of six boats. No. 4 Wellesley was third in 7:05.1, followed by Holy Cross, WPI and Rochester. The Bates women's second varsity eight (W2v8) also won a six-boat race, outpacing runner-up Wellesley 7:20.7 to 7:25.8 while also defeating Trinity, Holy Cross, WPI and Rochester.

The Bates men's varsity eight (MV8) finished a close second to Rhode Island in a four-boat race, 6:29.1 to 6:31.5, but was well ahead of WPI (6:37.6) and Rochester. Bates' M2V8 won a five-boat race in 6:39.4, topping WPI (6:44.0), WPI B (6:54.3), Rochester and URI.

Bates' W3V8 finished second to Trinity but ahead of Wellesley and WPI in its race.

Bates next rows Saturday, April 16 in Worcester against Trinity and the University of New Hampshire.

The lineup for the Bates women's varsity eight has captain Ellen Patterson '11 (St. Louis Park, Minn.) in the bow, followed by Emma White '11 (Bainbridge Island, Wash.), Hannah Richardson '11 (Concord, Mass.), Rebecca Waldo '11 (Dracut, Mass.), Elizabeth Sonshine '12 (Short Hills, N.J.), Haley Sive '12 (Glenville, N.Y.), Kelsey Dion '12 (Truckee, Calif.), stroke Allison DiSalvo '12 (Lowell, Mass.) and at coxswain, captain Nora Collins '11 (Kensington, Md.).

The women's second varsity eight has Aisling Ryan '14 (Millis, Mass.) in the bow, followed by Bliss Baker '14 (Sherborn, Mass.), Alexandra Hill '14 (Wayland, Mass.), Amy Jacks '12 (Baltimore, Md.), Catherine Tuttle '13 (Pittsford, N.Y.), Heather Monty '14 (Bedford, N.H.), Sarah Murphy '14 (Wellesley, Mass.), stroke Hope King '14 (Greenwich, Conn.) and cox Gabby Bilotta '14 (Washington, D.C.).
