CENTERVILLE, Mass. -- The Bates men's and women's rowing teams had one representative each on the 2011 ECAC National Invitational Rowing Championships All-Conference Teams, announced Thursday by tne Eastern College Athletic Conference.
Senior three-time All-American Rebecca Waldo (Dracut, Mass.) was named from the No. 2 nationally ranked Bates women's rowing team, which achieved its best-ever showing at the ECAC/NIRC regatta on May 8 in Worcester, Mass. The Bates women's varsity eight defeated six other boats -- Ithaca, New Hampshire, Hamilton, St. Lawrence, Tufts and Connecticut College -- in its preliminary heat to advance to the Grand Final. There the Bobcats had their highest finish ever at the regatta, taking second place behind top-ranked Williams, 6:45.177 to 6:50.657, with Wellesley in third at 6:52.895. It is Waldo's third honor this season, after receiving First Team All-America and First Team All-NESCAC honors earlier this month.
The Bates men's team is represented by sophomore Peter Haley (Cos Cob, Conn.), who receives his second honor of the season, after being named First Team All-NESCAC. At ECAC/NIRC, Haley and the Bates men's varsity eight took fourth place in one of three preliminary heats, rowing the 2,000 meters in 5:58.616, getting edged by Colby (5:56.352) for third place. The Bobcats got revenge in the Petite Final, outrowing the rival Mules 6:12.508 to 6:14.898 for first place in a tight six-boat race. New Hampshire (6:15.974) was third, followed by Rhode Island, WPI and RIT. It was Bates' second-best showing ever at the regatta.
It is the second year of the All-ECAC honors' existence in rowing. Last year Bates was represented by Danica Doroski '10 on the All-ECAC women's team, and by Cory Sanderson '10 from the men's team.
