Women's rowing set for this weekend's Head of the Charles

Two members of the Bates varsity eight, Rebecca Waldo '11 (left) and Kelsey Dion '12, were gearing up for this weekend's Head of the Charles during a morning practice last week.

The Bates women’s varsity eight will be competing against a group of 30 competitors in the Collegiate Eight event at this year’s Head of the Charles Regatta, known as the world’s premier fall regatta. Held from October 23rd through 24th, the Head of the Charles attracts a uniquely diverse field of crews each year, with athletes representing a variety of countries and regions. The Bobcats will be facing strong competition, including Williams College, Trinity College, and several other NESCAC schools.

First held in 1965, the Head of the Charles features two full days of racing, which take place along a winding, 3-mile long course. Often deemed one of the most challenging in all of competitive rowing, the race course begins in the Charles River Basin and then cuts through multiple bridges and sharp turns.

Last year, the Bates women placed 12th out of 35 boats in the Collegiate Eight event, finishing with a time of 18:56.782. Grand Valley State (Mich.) was victorious in 2009’s event. This year’s crew, hoping to best last year’s results, is comprised of the following student-athletes: (Coxswain) Nora Collins ’11, Catherine Tuttle ’13, Haley Sive ’12, Rebecca Waldo ’11, Kelsey Dion ’12, Emma White ’11, Hannah Richardson ’11, Lauren Hadiaris ’13 and Ellen Patterson ’11.
