WORCESTER, Mass. -- The Bates men's and women's rowing teams saw their first action of the fall season on Saturday at the Quinsigamond Snake Regatta, and both returned home with impressive showings.
The Bates women's varsity eight finished first out of 36 boats competing at the regatta, outdistancing runner-up Wellesley 14:22.550 to 14:28.601, with third-place WPI nearly 25 seconds behind the Bobcats, who are the three-time national runners-up at the NCAA Division III Women's Rowing Championship.
The Bates men's varsity eight also looked in excellent form, taking third place out of 24 boats overall and second among collegiate eights, with a time of 13:14.147. Only Holy Cross (12:55.356) outpaced the Bobcats on the course.
In men's fours, Bates took 11th place among 20 boats.
Bates rowing returns to action next weekend, Oct. 22-23 for the annual Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston.
