GREENE, Maine -- The No. 2 nationally ranked Bates women's rowing team outpaced its visitors from the University of New Hampshire and Middlebury College in both the first and second varsity eights races in a home regatta Sunday morning on the Androscoggin River.
Bates' 2V8 outpaced UNH 6:49.5 to 7:01.2 over 2,000 meters with a slight tailwind early in the morning. After a health issue delayed the WV8 race for an hour, Bates' varsity eight fought through a fairly stiff crosswind and finished in 6:46.1, with UNH and Middlebury finishing in a dead heat for second place at 7:00.64, or 14.54 seconds in back.
Both visiting teams posted race wins of their own: UNH won in varsity fours, and Middlebury's novice eight outpaced the 3V8s of Bates and UNH.
The regatta served as preparation for the New England Rowing Championships, scheduled for Saturday, May 5 in Worcester, Mass.
