GREENE, Maine -- The Bates men's rowing team beat all comers Sunday on the Androscoggin River, defeating visiting Middlebury and the University of Vermont in four races, including three eights races and one fours race.
Racing on a 1,950-meter course, shortened from the standard length by 50 meters due to a slight head current, Bates' MV8 outpaced Middlebury 5:52.6 to 5:59.6, with UVM third in 6:02.4.
The Bobcats won the M2V8 race handily, finishing 10.9 seconds ahead of runner-up UVM, 6:02.1 to 6:13.0, with Middlebury third at 6:16.6.
Bates' depth was exhibited with an even wider margin of victory in the M3V8 race, 6:13.6 to runner-up Middlebury's 6:26.8.
Bates put two fours on the water to go against one for both UVM and Middlebury, with the two Bobcat boats claiming the first two finishes, at 6:42.8 and 6:46.1, while UVM placed third at 6:54.8.
Bates travels to Worcester, Mass., on Sunday May 4 for the New England Rowing Championships.
