CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The Bates rowing teams had their first official regatta of the spring season Saturday on the Charles River, where the women's team swept four races from Simmons College while the men's team competed well against MIT and Boston College.
The women's varsity eight defeated Simmons' 1V8 by 26.4 seconds, covering 2,000 meters in 7:09.1 to Simmons' 7:35.5. The teams' other three races were won by the Bobcats in similar fashion: the 2V8 race was 7:17.4 to 7:45.6, the 3V8s were 7:25.2 to 8:15.6 and the novice eights were 7:37.8 to 7:53.6 in Bates' favor. The Bates women's rowing team, which has finished as the national runner-up for four consecutive years, is tied for third with Trinity in this year's first Division III CRCA/USRowing Coaches Poll, released March 20.
Bates' men's varsity eight finished the 2,000-meter course in 6:23.6, ahead of Boston College (6:42) by more than 18 seconds, while crossing the finish line only 2.6 seconds behind the leader and host Engineers (6:21.0). In the 2V8 race featuring five boats, Bates' 2V8 and 3V8 were fourth and fifth, respectively, in 6:40 and 6:55. Bates also raced its varsity four against MIT, where the Engineers prevailed 7:32.9 to 7:44.6.
Saturday's regatta precedes the Bates rowing teams' journey to San Diego, Calif., for the San Diego Crew Classic taking place April 6-7.
