LEWISTON, Maine -- Bates College and Colby College split their NESCAC East Division softball doubleheader on Friday, with the host Bobcats taking Game 1 5-1 behind senior starting pitcher Kristin Masino and the visiting White Mules blanking Bates 3-0 in Game 2.
The split gives Colby a 2-1 edge in the teams' three-game series, but Bates maintains third place in the division at 3-5 (5-9 overall) while Colby holds fourth place at 2-4 (10-6 overall).
Bates will host a non-divisional doubleheader against Wesleyan University on Saturday, starting at 11 a.m. Colby hosts St. Joseph's Saturday at noon.
Masino (North Arlington, N.J.) held Colby to a single run on six hits in her six-inning winning effort, which lifted her record to 4-5 this season. She helped herself with an RBI single in a two-run fifth inning. Sophomore Christina Knobel (Walpole, Mass.) pitched a shutout seventh for Bates.
Bates senior Katie Franklin (New Preston, Conn.) singled and scored in both the first and third innings, going 2-4 in the game. First-year OF Jill Cappucci (Saugus, Mass.) was also 2-4, including the RBI double that scored Franklin in the first.
Sophomore 3B Leah Citrin (Rye Brook, N.Y.) scored twice and singled Franklin home in the third. Sophomore C/UT Molly Ritner (Wynnewood, Pa.) also had an RBI hit in the inning.
Colby scored in the second when junior Mollie Puskar (Pittsburgh, Pa.) walked and came home on senior Amy Palmer's (Quispalmis, New Brunswick) RBI single.
Sophomore Randi Arsenault (South Paris, Maine) started for Colby and allowed five runs (two earned) on 10 hits. Bates took advantage of five errors in the game.
In Game 2, Colby sophomore Alyssa Crowell (Gilford, N.H.) limited the Bobcats to no runs on four hits and two walks, striking out five. Colby's defense stabilized and the infield made crisp plays to stave off any Bates rallies. The Bobcats threatened in the sixth inning with runners at second and third and one out but Crowell responded by retiring two straight batters. Crowell also was 2-3 at the plate.
Sophomore Stacia Saniuk (Sharon, Mass.) had two of Bates' four hits.
The Mules scored solo runs in the first and second innings off of Bates first-year starter Shayna Waldman (Playa del Rey, Calif.). Masino came on for the final five innings and held the Mules to one run on four hits.
Colby loaded the bases with no outs to start off the first inning, but the Waldman and the Bobcats escaped the inning having allowed only Amy Palmer's RBI walk. Sophomore Carlie Minichino (Stratford, Conn.) was 2-3 with an RBI to shared the lead in Colby's seven-hit offensive effort.
