Katie Franklin '09

Stacia Saniuk '09

Leah Citrin '09

Val Beckwith '09

HARTFORD, Conn. -- Bates scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat Trinity College 4-3 and earn a split of the team's NESCAC East Division doubleheader Saturday.

Trinity won the first game 17-4 and is now 13-3 overall and 4-1 in the NESCAC East Division, while the Bobcats move to 4-7 overall and 2-3 in the division. The games were played at Trinity with Bates as the home team due to snow this week in Maine.

Senior Katie Franklin's (New Preston, Conn.) two-out, two-run single scored sophomore Val Beckwith (Woburn, Mass.) and junior Beth Lakin (Tacoma, Wash.) to end the second game with a thrilling win. Beckwith had hit an RBI single to score first-year Jill Cappucci (Saugus, Mass.), who had walked. Sophomore Leah Citrin (Rye Brook, N.Y.) hit a pinch single for first-year Liz Stahler (Lyndonville, Vt.), who re-entered the game and scored on senior Caitlin Murphy's (Westwood, Mass.) RBI groundout earlier in the inning.

Junior righty Brittany Alvino (Warren, N.J.) was the hard luck loser for the Bantams in the second game, allowing just five hits and zero earned runs in a complete-game effort.

The Bantams scored 11 runs in the fourth inning of Game 1, with Masino unable to retire the first eight batters of the inning, en route to the blowout 17-4 victory. Bates sophomore Stacia Saniuk (Sharon, Mass.) hit a three-run home run in the third inning, her second of the year, to tie the game at 3 after three. Saniuk had two hits and four RBIs in the game.

The Bantams tacked on 11 runs in the top of the fourth frame, capitalizing on three more Bates errors, as freshman CF Jessica Tait (North Salem, N.Y.) belted a three-run homer and doubled home another run later in the inning.  Trinity scored three more times in the fifth frame to end the game on the eight-run mercy rule.  Senior co-captain LHP Sara Dougherty (Long Valley, N.J.) improved to 7-1 on the mound with a five-hitter, striking out four and walking three, and added three hits and two RBI at the plate.

Bates next has a doubleheader at Thomas College scheduled for April 15.
