LEWISTON, Maine -- Bowdoin College scored seven runs in the sixth inning to complete a come-from-behind 9-3 NESCAC East Division victory over the Bates College softball team Tuesday at Lafayette Street Field.

Bowdoin advances to 25-14 overall and 5-7 in the division. In the final game of the season for both teams, the Polar Bears tied the school record for wins in a season, set by the 2002 squad. Bates finishes the season at 6-18, 3-9 in NESCAC East play.

Bates took a 3-0 lead in the third inning on the strength of two Bowdoin errors and three hits by the Bobcats: a one-out by senior Katie Franklin (New Preston, Conn.), an RBI single by sophomore Leah Citrin (Rye Brook, N.Y.) and first-year Liz Stahler's (Lyndonville, Vt.) RBI double down the right field line off of Bowdoin starter Karen Reni (Ashland, Mass.; 13-8).

Bowdoin got on the board after Bates senior starter Kristin Masino (North Arlington, N.J.) had allowed no runs and only two baserunners through the first three innings. Sophomore Alison Coleman (Lewiston, Maine) drew a leadoff walk and was followed by a Sarah Stern (Newport Coast, Calif.) single and Jessica Paris's (Rye, N.Y.) RBI double to left center. An out later, first-year Lauren Coven (Ridgewood, N.J.) singled Stern home, closing the gap to 3-2 before Masino got out of the inning with two straight outs.

Masino (5-10) was in position for the win until the Polar Bears broke out in the sixth, sending 11 batters to the plate and collecting six hits, combined with two of Bates' five errors in the game. Masino surrendered five of the runs before giving way to sophomore Christina Knobel (Walpole, Mass.) with two outs and two on. First-year Clare Ronan (Jenkintown, Pa.) stroked a two-run double to make it 9-3 Bowdoin before Knobel struck out Coven to put an end to the Polar Bears' big inning.

Playing in their final games for the Bobcats were seniors Rashel Burton (Oxnard, Calif.), who went 1-for-3 in the game, Franklin, Masino and Caitlin Murphy (Westwood, Mass.), who went 1-for-4 in the game. Franklin, a two-time All-NESCAC First Team outfielder, went 3-for-3 to push her season-ending batting average over the .400 mark to a career-high .406. Franklin set single-season school records last year in doubles (14) and extra-base hits (19).

Masino also set program records last season in victories (14), starts (21) and innings (122 1/3).

Finishing her career for Bowdoin was senior Jayme Woogerd (Seattle, Wash.), who went 1-for-5.
