VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Bates College dropped a pair of games Saturday in the Beach Blast at Virginia Wesleyan University, losing to Davis & Elkins 7-2 before the Bobcats' bats revived a bit in the day's second game, a 9-5 decision against Peace College.

The Bobcats (0-4) managed only three hits in the first game and plated both of their runs in the fifth inning, when sophomore Liz Stahler (Lyndonville, Vt.) and junior Val Beckwith (Woburn, Mass.) each had hits and scored. Stahler went 1-3 with a walk and a run scored while batting leadoff. Sophomore Jill Cappucci (Saugus, Mass.) also collected a hit.

First-year Sarah Cullen (Dover, Mass.) started and went four innings, allowing 6 runs on 7 hits with 2 strikeouts. First-year Liz Johnston (Westport, Conn.) came on for three innings in relief, allowing the Cougars only one more run on one hit while striking out two.

In the second game of the day, Peace College scored two runs in the second and one in the third before chalking up five runs in the fourth inning. The Cougars tacked on one more run in the fifth.

First-year Hannah Dwan (Litchfield, Conn.) started and lasted 3-plus innings, allowing 6 runs on 6 hits and 3 walks while striking out two. Senior Shayna Waldman (Playa del Rey, Calif.) came on for two outs in relief and was tagged with two runs on one hit, a hits batsmen and two walks.

Johnston came on with the bases loaded in the fifth and ended the bleeding with a strikeout. Johnston would last 2 1/3 innings, giving up one run on two hits with a pair of strikeouts to cap an impressive day for the first-year hurler.

Bates scored four runs in the fourth and added one in the sixth. Pacing the offense by each going 1-3 at the plate with a run scored were senior Alex Bethel (Aspen, Colo.), junior Stacia Saniuk (Sharon, Mass.), junior Leah Citrin (Rye Brook, N.Y.) and Jill Cappucci.

First-year Kate Brodoff (Newton, Mass.) went 2-3 in the game, and first-year Jacquie Macdonald (Milton, Mass.) smacked a double in her lone at-bat. Sophomore Jean McIntyre (Marshfield, Mass.) also collected a hit for Bates.

Next on the Bobcats' schedule is a doubleheader at Rhode Island College on March 19, starting at 3 p.m.
