WATERVILLE, Maine --- Alyssa Crowell (Gilford, N.H.) pitched a two-hit shutout in the opener and Amanda Roehn (Tampa, Fla.) went six strong innings in the nightcap as the Colby College softball team took 2-0 and 2-1 victories over Bates College in New England Small College Athletic Conference East Division softball Friday.
Crowell improved to 3-2 on the season by allowing singles in the fourth and fifth innings for the Mules (8-12, 2-7 NESCAC East) in the first game.
Colby got its only two runs in the fifth inning when Lizzi Fort (Wilmette, Ill.) smacked a two-run single to drive in Mollie Puskar (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and Allyson Cheever (Augusta, Maine). Carlie Minichino had a double and Cheever went 2-for-2 for Colby's other hits in the game.
First-year Liz Johnston (Westport, Conn.) pitched well for Bates in the opener and allowed just four hits over six innings. Junior Val Beckwith (Woburn, Mass.) and sophomore Jean McIntyre (Marshfield, Mass.) had the Bobcats' hits.
The Mules scored twice in the second inning of the nightcap and then held on for the victory. Puskar had a one-out double and scored when Alyssa Lepore (Victor, N.Y.) doubled in the next at-bat. Lepore later came around to score on a Bates error.
Puskar and Lepore both had two hits in the second game. Annie Wilson (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) had a hit and walk for the Mules.
Bates (5-14, 2-6 NESCAC East) got a run back in the fifth inning. Liz Stahler (Lyndonville, Vt.) had a one-out single and later came around to score on a single by McIntyre.
Roehn pitched six innings and allowed just two Bates hits. Minichino pitched the seventh inning and earned her first collegiate save.
Bates junior pitcher Christina Knobel (Walpole, Mass.) gave up eight hits in six innings.
Bates plays a doubleheader at Brandeis University tomorrow, starting at 11 a.m.
