Finn throws no-hitter as softball sweeps Fisher

Kristen Finn '12 notched her first career no-hitter and struck out eight batters in the process.

LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College softball team ended its season with a bang on Tuesday, sweeping Fisher College in a pair of five-inning, mercy-rule wins behind stellar pitching, including a no-hitter in Game 1.

Sophomore pitcher Kristen Finn (Winthrop, Mass.) threw the no-hitter for the Bobcats (7-25) in Game 1, allowing the Falcons (17-26) one unearned run on four walks and two hit batsmen while striking out a season-high eight batters to finish 3-12 on the season.

In Game 2, first-year pitcher Caroline Gattuso (North Reading, Mass.) notched a career-high 10 strikeouts in just five innings, allowing one run on five hits and two walks to finish 4-13 on the year.

Bates jumped on Fisher in the first inning of Game 1. Sophomore Karen Ullmann (Ramsey, N.J.) led off with a walk and scored on sophomore Lauren Dobish's (Chambersburg, Pa.) double, then sophomore Monica Berube (Plaistow, N.H.) followed with a two-run home run, her second of the season. That gave Bates a 3-1 lead after one inning, because the Falcons scored their lone run in the first as well. Brittany Calderon led the game off with a walk, moved to second when Amanda Davis reached on an error. Calderon stole third base before the Falcons loaded the bases on a walk to Debbie Fuller. Calderon then came home as Finn hit Courtney Gollotto for an RBI HBP.

The Bobcats added eight runs in the second inning on eight hits, including four run-scoring doubles. Sophomore Courtney Talcott (Sutton, Mass.) started off the scoring with a one-out, two-run double, bringing up Dobish, who doubled again to score Talcott. The double was the 15th of the season for Dobish, breaking the team record of 14 set by Katie Franklin '07 in 2006.

Berube walked to put another runner on, and sophomore Leah Maciejewski (Tewksbury, Mass.) followed with an RBI double of her own to open up a 7-0 Bates lead. After first-year Mary Lewis (Gardiner, Maine) got on base with her second infield hit of the game, sophomore Kelly McManus (Plymouth, N.H.) hit a two-run double to make it 9-0 Bates, still with just one out. An RBI groundout by sophomore Vanessa Truglio (New Britain, Conn.) and a run-scoring infield single by Jean McIntyre finished up the scoring in the inning.

Mika Wilson came on for Fisher's starting pitcher, Calderon, to start the third inning, and she held the Bobcats scoreless in the third and fourth innings. But Bates clinched the mercy-rule win as Finn retired the side in order in the third, fourth and fifth innings.

Gattuso surrendered Fisher's lone run in Game 2 on a solo homer by Jackie Streeter in the third inning, her ninth round-tripper of the season. But by that time Bates already had put four runs up. Ullmann scored in the first inning, reaching on an infield hit, moving to second on a sacrifice by Talcott, stealing third base and scoring on a groundout by Dobish. Bates added three runs in the second on four hits despite leaving the bases loaded. Lewis reached on an infield single and scored on a wild pitch, while Ullmann added an RBI single and Dobish recorded a bases-loaded RBI walk.

The Bobcats scored in all five innings of Game 2 off of Fisher's starter, Wilson, while Gattuso kept the Falcons scoreless in the fourth and fifth. After scoring individual runs in the third and fourth, Bates finished the game in the fifth by scoring three runs. Sophomore Libby King (South Portland, Maine) led off with a single. Sophomore Katherine Buckley (Middlebury, Conn.) followed with a walk. Senior Jean McIntyre (Marshfield, Mass.) came up and reached on a three-base error that scored both King and Buckley. Standing at third base as the potential game-ending run, McIntyre came home on a wild pitch, stopping the game with no outs recorded for Bates in the inning.

Bates totaled 20 hits between the two games, including a 5-for-6 day by Ullmann and a 4-for-5 day by Lewis. Dobish drove in four runs in her record-setting day. Playing in her final two games, the team's lone senior, McIntyre, went 2-for-5 on the day with two runs scored and an RBI.
