Softball team gets 12 hits in loss at Trinity

HARTFORD, Conn. -- The Bates College softball team rapped out 12 hits but produced just one run to show for it, falling 5-1 to Trinity College on Friday in the NESCAC East Division opener for both teams.

The Bobcats (2-9, 0-1 NESCAC East) left nine runners on base, while the Bantams (5-7, 1-0) stranded just three runners in the game.

Bates first-year pitcher Caroline Gattuso (North Reading, Mass.) accepted the loss to drop to 1-5, allowing five runs on nine hits with no walks while striking out two batters in six innings of work.

Kristen Anderson scattered 12 hits and issued no walks to earn the complete-game win, raising her record to 4-3.

Bates sophomore catcher Leah Maciejewski (Tewksbury, Mass.) went 3-for-4 at the plate with a double. Sophomore first baseman Monica Berube (Plaistow, N.H.) went 2-for-3 and drove in Bates' lone run, while sophomore outfielder Courtney Talcott (Sutton, Mass.) went 2-for-4.

Trinity struck for four runs on five hits in the bottom of the first, including doubles by Jessica Tait and Patricia Cipicchio. After that, Gattuso settled down to toss four straight shutout innings. Bates shortened the deficit to 4-1 in the fifth inning with a two-out rally. Maciejewski singled and was replaced by first-year pinch runner Vanessa Truglio (New Britain, Conn.). Sophomore Lauren Dobish (Chambersburg, Pa.) moved Truglio to second with a single, and both runners advanced on a passed ball. Berube delivered a single to score Truglio, but Dobish was thrown out at home on the play by left fielder Amelia Mostovoy to end the inning.

Trinity added an insurance run in the sixth on an RBI single by Caroline Blanchard.

The teams meet again on Saturday for a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m.
