Softball team opens season with split doubleheader

CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Bates College softball team opened the 2010 season Thursday with a split doubleheader at the National Training Center -- the Bobcats dropped a 6-0 result against Mount Vernon Nazarene University before topping Indiana Tech 6-1.

First-year pitcher Caroline Gattuso (North Reading, Mass.) threw a complete game to earn the victory over Indiana Tech, scattering four hits and five walks over seven innings and allowing one run while striking out five batters. The Bates offense rapped out 11 hits, three apiece by sophomore catcher Leah Maciejewski (Tewksbury, Mass.), sophomore second baseman Lauren Dobish (Chambersburg, Pa.) and first-year shortstop Mary Lewis (Gardiner, Maine). Dobish and Lewis were both 3-for-3 with an RBI apiece, while Maciejewski went 3-for-4 for two RBIs and a run scored.

The Bobcats got out to a 3-0 lead after one inning, as sophomore outfielder Karen Ullman (Ramsey, N.J.) reached on an error, was sacrificed to second by sophomore third baseman Kelly McManus (Plymouth, N.H.) and driven home on a double to left center by Maciejewski. Dobish followed with a two-out double down the left-field line to score Maciejewski, and she later came home on a fielding error.

Indiana Tech (11-6) took a run back in the third, but the Bobcats added two more to their lead in the fourth. Lewis led off with a bunt single and stole second, then came home on Maciejewski's single down the left-field line. Ullmann, who had been hit by a pitch, advanced to third on the throw and later stole home plate on a double-steal with sophomore Kiely Webster (Bethesda, Md.).

Bates added one more run in the fifth. Dobish and first-year AnnaMarie Martino (Plymouth, Minn.) bunted on for a single. Lewis then singled through the right side to score Dobish.

The Bobcats' season opener against Mount Vernon Nazarene got off to a difficult start that proved too much to overcome. MVNU struck for five runs in the first inning, including a grand slam by Kaylee Hewitt, to put the Bobcats in a 5-0 hole.

Both Ullmann and McManus collected a pair of hits -- McManus was 2-for-3 and Ullman was 2-for-4 with a double. Senior outfielder Jean McIntyre (Marshfield, Mass.) and Dobish each went 1-for-3, and first-year Mollie Kervick (Windsor Locks, Conn.) hit a pinch-hit double in the seventh inning.

Sophomore pitcher Kristen Finn (Winthrop, Mass.) went the distance for Bates, allowing six runs, five unearned, on nine hits and a walk.
