BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Bates and Bowdoin softball teams finally played their rubber match on Sunday after two previous postponements, and the host Polar Bears prevailed 1-0 in a pitcher's duel between Bowdoin first-year Melissa DellaTorre and Bates sophomore Caroline Gattuso (North Reading, Mass.).
Gattuso allowed the game's only run on four hits and two walks. She matched her career high with 10 strikeouts, and broke her own Bates single-season strikeouts record in the process. She now has 75 K's, after setting the team record of 69 last season. She dropped to 6-6.
But DellaTorre was even more effective, limiting Bates to three hits and a walk while striking out six Bobcats over seven scoreless innings. Junior Karen Ullmann (Ramsey, N.J.) and sophomores Mary Lewis (Gardiner, Maine) and AnnaMarie Martino (Plymouth, Minn.) recorded Bates' only hits.
Bates has a doubleheader at Husson scheduled for Tuesday at 4 p.m., in what would be the team's season finale.
