WATERVILLE, Maine -- The Bates softball team scored three runs in the first inning and never looked back in a 5-0 win over Colby College in New England Small College Athletic Conference East Division softball Friday at Crafts Field.
Bates junior Courtney Talcott (Sutton, Mass.) had three hits and three RBIs for the Bobcats. She had an RBI single in the first inning and added a two-run double in the seventh. Junior Leah Maciejewski (Tewksbury, Mass.) added two hits, two runs, and an RBI for the winners. Junior Lauren Dobish (Chambersburg, Pa.) also had two hits and scored one run for Bates. Her double was the 28th of her career, extending her own team record.
Maciejewski and first-year AnnaMarie Martino (Plymouth, Minn.) also had RBI singles in the first inning to support sophomore pitcher Caroline Gattuso (North Reading, Mass.), who threw her second straight seven-inning, complete-game shutout, limiting the Mules to seven hits and no walks while striking out three batters. Gattuso raised her record to 5-5 and lowered her earned run average to 3.25 on the year.
Kelly Roth went 1-for-2 to lead the Mules.
