BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Junior captain Leah Maciejewski collected three hits, including a two-run home run, to lead the Bates College softball team to a 7-4 win over Bowdoin at a rainy Pickard Field Saturday.

Game two of the scheduled doubleheader between the NESCAC East Division foes was called due to the worsening weather. No make-up date has been announced.

With their first win over Bowdoin since 2009, the Bobcats improve to 8-10 (2-6 NESCAC) while the Polar Bears dip to 18-15 (7-4 NESCAC).

Bowdoin took a second-inning lead thanks to Gen Barlow's fourth home run of season, a solo shot to left field.

After leaving eight runners on base over the first three innings, the Bobcat bats came alive in the fourth, as the visitors plated two runs on a Maciejewski (Tewksbury, Mass.) single and hit by sophomore AnnaMarie Martino (Plymouth, Minn.) to take a 2-1 lead. Bates added another run in the fifth on an error and scored twice more in the fifth on an RBI double by junior Courtney Talcott (Sutton, Mass.) and a single by first-year Alayna Garbarino (Reading, Mass.) to increase their advantage to 5-1.

The Polar Bears scored three times in the bottom of the frame, piecing together a rally in the continuing rain on a bases loaded walk from Hillary Smith, an RBI ground out by Molly Nestor and a wild pitch that scored Barlow to close within 5-4.

Bates brought in sophomore pitcher Caroline Gattuso (North Reading, Mass.) to squelch the comeback. Gattuso retired the final Polar Bear batter with two runners on base to secure the lead. Maciejewski then sealed the win for Bates with a long two-run blast over the left field wall in the top of the seventh, her first career round-tripper.

Bates junior starting pitcher Kristen Finn (Winthrop, Mass.) earned the victory after allowing just three hits but walking eight over 5 2/3 innings pitched, to even her record this season at 5-5. Gattuso collected her second save of the season for the Bobcats. Tricia Thibodeau took the loss after allowing four earned runs and 12 hits for Bowdoin.

Martino and Garbarino had two hits apiece for the Bobcats, while Bowdoin's Amy Hackett and Barlow each reached base four times in the loss.

Bates will host Thomas College on Monday for a rescheduled doubleheader, with first pitch slated for 3:30 p.m.
