CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Bates College softball team got the 2011 season off to a 2-0 start on Thursday, posting a 9-1 win over Macalester College in the afternoon, then defeating Berry College 5-2 Thursday night at the National Training Center Tournament.
Bates (2-0) snapped Berry's (13-6) eight-game winning streak. The Scots of Macalester fell to 6-5 with their loss to the Bobcats.
Game 1 Recap: Bates 9, Macalester 1
Bates junior Kristen Finn (Winthrop, Mass.) threw a complete game for the win over Macalester, allowing just one run on five hits and two walks. Meanwhile, junior Lauren Dobish (Chambersburg, Pa.) led a clamorous hit parade for Bates, going 3-for-4 at the plate with three runs batted in, including a game-ending RBI double. Junior Karen Ullmann (Ramsey, N.J.) went 2-for-3 with a triple, a walk, three runs scored, an RBI and a stolen base. Other offensive standouts included junior Kelly McManus (Plymouth, N.H.), who was 2-for-4 with two runs, an RBI and a steal, junior Monica Berube (Plaistow, N.H.), who was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs, junior Leah Maciejewski (Tewksbury, Mass.), who had a double and two RBIs, and sophomore Mary Lewis (Gardiner, Maine), who went 2-for-3 with a run and a steal.
The Bobcats scored two runs in the first inning, then four more in the second, while the Scots posted what would be their lone run in the second, with a double by Hayley Reeves followed by an RBI single by Meghan Merriman. The Bobcats finished the game via mercy rule in the fifth inning, scoring three more runs.
Game 2 Recap: Bates 5, Berry 2
Bates sophomore Caroline Gattuso (North Reading, Mass.) gave the Bobcats another strong, complete-game performance in the win over the Vikings of Berry College. She held Berry to two runs on three hits, while striking out four. Gattuso delivered at the plate as well, hitting a two-run single in the second inning and also stealing a base.
Ullmann led off the game with a triple, and scored on a passed ball for Bates' first run. She also scored a run in Bates' four-run second inning and stole a base.
Sophomore catcher AnnaMarie Martino (Plymouth, Minn.) went 1-for-2 with a double and a run scored. Also collecting hits for the Bobcats were Berube, Dobish, Maciejewski, Lewis and junior Libby King (South Portland, Maine).
Berry scored its two runs in the second inning, on a walk, a triple by Jessica Washington and a double by Sara Vigue.
Bates plays another pair of games on Friday in Clermont, starting with Transylvania at 2:45 p.m. and followed by Bates head coach Gwen Lexow's alma mater, Knox College, at 5:30 p.m. On Saturday they'll wrap up the trip with games against Western Connecticut State (9:30 a.m.) and Elmhurst (11:30 a.m.).
