HARTFORD, Conn. -- Senior Kristen Finn pitched a complete-game victory in Game 1 and junior AnnaMarie Martino went 4-for-7 at the plate as the Bates softball team split a doubleheader at Trinity on Friday, as the teams both opened NESCAC East Division play. Bates won the opener 4-2, then lost 5-1 in Game 2.
Finn limited the Bantams to two runs (one earned) on six hits and one walk, striking out two, raising her record this season to 1-3. Bates staked her to a 2-0 lead with runs in the second and third, but Trinity tied the game with a pair of runs in the fifth.
Junior Mary Lewis (Gardiner, Maine) reached on an error to lead off the sixth inning, then scored from third base on senior Kelsey Flaherty's (South Portland, Maine) single. The Bobcats added a run to their lead in the seventh as senior Leah Maciejewski (Tewksbury, Mass.) doubled and Martino drove her home with a triple.
Bates senior Kelly McManus (Plymouth, N.H.) went 3-for-3 at the plate in Game 2, but Trinity took control of the game with three runs in the third inning and two more in the fourth. The Bantams drew two bases-loaded walks in the third inning and an RBI double by Caroline Blanchard. Abby Ostrom hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning.
Trinity moved to 7-6 on the year, while Bates moved to 5-5 overall.
Inhospitable weather forecast for Connecticut prompted a reshuffling of the Bobcats' schedule. Rather than play the doubleheader on Saturday, they got it in on Friday, and will finish the series with a single game on Saturday at 12pm. A doubleheader at Wesleyan, scheduled for Sunday, has been postponed indefinitely.
