CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Bates College softball team finished its season-opening trip to the National Training Center Tournament with a 2-4 record, after falling to Western Connecticut State 7-0, then to Western New England 7-3 on Saturday morning.
Western Conn (3-0) got a five-hitter from its starting pitcher; first-year Bates starter Kelsey Freedman (Falmouth, Maine) allowed nine hits and four walks while striking out five in her six innings of work. Senior Karen Ullmann (Ramsey, N.J.) tripled to extend her own Bates career record to 11, and junior AnnaMarie Martino (Plymouth, Minn.) went 2-for-3 at the plate with a pair of singles. Senior captains Lauren Dobish (Chambersburg, Pa.) and Leah Maciejewski (Tewksbury, Mass.) also had hits in the game.
In Bates' second game of the morning, WNE (1-1) reached Bates senior starting pitcher Kristen Finn for all seven of their runs in three-plus innings of work. Freedman came on to record all three outs for Bates in the fourth inning, and first-year lefthander Brenna Callahan (Milton, Mass.) held the Golden Bears scoreless over the final two innings.
Ullmann had an RBI hit in the fourth inning and went 2-for-4 in the game. Sophomore Alayna Garbarino (Reading, Mass.) went 2-for-3, including a double, and also drew a walk.
Bates next plays a doubleheader at Fisher College next Saturday, March 24, starting at 12pm.
