Softball sweeps UMF for team-record 9th straight win

FARMINGTON, Maine -- The Bates softball team set a program record by extending its win streak to nine games, as the Bobcats dispatched the University of Maine at Farmington 8-3, 14-6 in non-conference softball action Wednesday at Prescott Field.

The Bobcats' former win streak record was eight, set in 1988.

In the first game, the Bobcats (14-6) posted six runs in the third inning to help the visitors to an 8-3 victory.

Kaitlyn Bartlett and Christine Tovey each had a sacrifice fly as the Beavers (10-16) opened the game with a 3-0 start. A three-run home run by senior Lauren Dobish (Chambersburg, Pa.) highlighted Bates' six-run frame, which included a pair of UMF errors. It was Dobish's fourth home run of the season and her second in as many days. Sophomore Alayna Garbarino (Reading, Mass.) and senior Courtney Talcott (Sutton, Mass.) each had an RBI single in the fifth to complete the scoring.

Amy Jones singled twice for UMF, while Tovey aldo had a double.

Dobish had a double, extending her own Bates career record to 38, to go along with her three-run blast. Junior AnnaMarie Martino (Plymouth, Minn.) and senior Kiely Webster (Bethesda, Md.) also enjoyed two-hit games.

Bartlett took the loss with 10 hits allowed, two walks and five strikeouts.

Senior Kristen Finn (Winthrop, Mass.) went six innings in the win with a walk and five strikeouts, raising her record to 6-4.

In the second game, Bates broke the game open with a seven-run sixth as the Bobcats finished the two-game set with a 14-6 victory.

Bartlett hit a grand slam home run to give the Beavers a 6-4 lead in the fifth. Bates responded with seven runs on four hits, three walks and an error in the sixth to grab an 11-6 advantage. Dobish smacked a two-run single in the inning, with Martino and senior Libby King (South Portland, Maine) each supplying RBI doubles.

Shannon Mitchell singled and tripled for UMF, while Jones had a pair of singles and two RBIs.

Martino, senior Leah Maciejewski (Tewksbury, Mass.) and senior Karen Ullmann (Ramsey, N.J.) each singled and doubled to lead Bates' 12-hit attack.

First-year Kelsey Freedman (Falmouth, Maine) tossed six innings in the win with seven hits allowed, three walks and four punchouts. She won her fourth straight decision, moving to 7-2 on the season.

Anna Piggott was hit with the loss, throwing six innings with 11 hits allowed, five walks and a strikeout.

Bates hosts NESCAC East Division leader Tufts on Friday in a doubleheader starting at 3pm, followed by a third game on Saturday at 11:30am. The schedule for the series was adjusted on Thursday to account for Saturday's forecast for rain. (Live Stats / Audio)
