Softball sweeps USM for seven straight wins

LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College softball team swept the University of Southern Maine in a doubleheader on Tuesday to extend its win streak to seven games. The host Bobcats won 11-1 in an 8-run rule-shortened Game 1 before taking Game 2 by an 8-1 score.

The Bobcats (12-6) scored seven runs in the first inning of Game 1, with both Lauren Dobish and AnnaMarie Martino hitting two-run home runs before Bates' first out was recorded. The Bobcats tacked on four more in the second inning for an 11-1 lead after two.

Bates starter Kristen Finn needed just three innings to earn the win and raise her record to 5-4 on the season. Brenna Callahan pitched the final two innings.

USM starter Stefanie Stockwell recorded two outs before leaving the game in the first inning after a line drive by Kelly McManus struck her in the wrist. Alexandra Perdomo pitched the final 3.1 innings for USM.

Perdomo then went the distance in Game 2 for the Huskies (3-25), allowing eight runs (five earned) on 11 hits and three walks.

Bates' Game 2 starter, first-year Kelsey Freedman (Falmouth, Maine), rose to 6-2 by limiting the huskies to one run on three hits and a walk over five innings. Callahan again threw two shutout innings in relief.

Martino was Bates' offensive star, going 3-for-4 with two runs and the two-run homer in Game 1, then batting 3-for-3 in Game 2 with three runs scored and another RBI. Dobish, Mary Lewis and Courtney Talcott all had three hits on the day.

Bates stole eight bases on eight attempts, while USM was thrown out on all four of its steal attempts.

Katie Davis had four hits on the day for USM, including a 3-for-3 performance with an RBI in Game 1. Cara Radino and Meghan Rumore also had two hits apiece on the day.

Bates plays a doubleheader at UMaine-Farmington tomorrow at 3:30, while USM hosts Plymouth State for a doubleheader tomorrow at the same time.
