CASTINE, Maine -- First-year Anna Berenson drove in junior Alayna Garbarino with the winning run in the eighth inning, giving Bates a 7-6 victory and a split of Saturday's non-conference doubleheader at Maine Maritime Academy. The host Mariners (2-7) won the first game 10-6.
Garbarino (Andover, Mass.) was placed on second base to begin the extra eighth inning, and she moved to third on a single by first-year Alex Eliopoulos (Akron, Ohio). Berenson (Topsfield, Mass.) came up and grounded out to second base to bring Garbarino home with the eventual game-winning run.
Bates (4-4) sophomore Kelsey Freedman (Falmouth, Maine) pitched a 1-2-3 bottom of the eighth, striking out Kelsie Hilton looking for the final out and her career-best 10th punchout of the game to preserve the eight-inning, complete-game victory at chilly, wind-swept Ritchie Field.
Sophomore Molly Brown (South Dartmouth, Mass.) put Bates ahead 1-0 in the top of the first of the first game before home runs by Sabrina Keach and Hilton gave the Mariners a 5-1 advantage. Keach's shot plated Cindy Schultz while Hilton's brought in Erica Taylor and Leah Jackson.
Keach's single in the second scored Andi Flannery and Jess Menges and put the Mariners ahead 7-1.
Bates got three runs back in the third, two on single by senior Caroline Gattuso (North Reading, Mass.), and one on a fielder's choice. Hayley Rae belted a two-run blast in the fifth for Maine Maritime, to make it 9-4. The Mariners added another run in the sixth on an error and the Bobcats posted two in the top of the seventh.
Abby Yeo improved to 2-3 with the win. In seven innings, Yeo gave up seven hits, struck out one and walked five. Despite a career-high nine strikeouts, Gattuso was saddled with the loss and fell to 1-2.
Both teams traded a run in the first inning of the second game. Gattuso's single scored senior Mary Lewis (Gardiner, Maine) for Bates before Jackson went yard on a solo shot in the bottom of the inning.
Bates added four in the top of the third before the Mariners matched that number in the bottom of the inning to keep the game even at 5-5. Gattuso singled, senior AnnaMarie Martino (Plymouth, Minn.) drew a bases-loaded walk and Elioppoulos stroked a two-run single in the inning for Bates. Keach hit a two-run double in the bottom of the third and Taylor followed with a two-run homer.
First-year Karen Lockhart (East Greenwich, R.I.) singled in a run in the fifth to give Bates a 6-5 lead before Keach jacked her second home run of the day, a solo shot, in the bottom of the fifth to even the game at 6-6.
Freedman improved to 2-1 with the win. Taylor took the loss and fell to 0-6. She struck out six and walked three.
Next up for the Bobcats is the opening of NESCAC East Division play: a three-game series at Tufts next weekend, beginning with a single game on Friday at 4pm. Bates' home doubleheader against Thomas College, originally scheduled for March 27, has been rescheduled to April 22.
