Softball swept at red-hot Bowdoin

BRUNSWICK, Maine -- Bowdoin completed a series sweep of the Bates softball team Saturday afternoon at Pickard Field, 9-1 in game one and 9-4 in game two, for their 12th straight victory.

With the wins, the Polar Bears (23-9, 8-4) clinched a bid to the NESCAC Championship, as the second seed out of the East Division. Bates dropped to 7-14, 1-8 in the NESCAC East.

Bates opened the game with a single from senior Mary Lewis (Gardiner, Maine), who capitalized on a Bowdoin error and advanced to third on the following batter. Sophomore Kelsey Freedman (Falmouth, Maine) batted third for the Bobcats and put the ball in play, resulting in another Bowdoin misstep, allowing Lewis to put a run on the board for the visitors.

The Polar Bears answered in the bottom of the first as Hanna Wurgaft and Toni DaCampo opened the inning with back to back singles before Katie Gately doubled to center, scoring the pair. Nicole Nelson singled to right, putting runners on the corners for Bowdoin. Casey Correa's cleared the bases with a home run to center to put the Polar Bears up 5-1.

Wurgaft led off for Bowdoin in the second game with a double to center. DaCampo's RBI single in the number two slot put the Polar Bears up 1-0. Tricia Thibodeau held Bates to two hits through the opening four innings, allowing Bowdoin to build a 7-0 lead. Gately homered, Rusch had two RBIs and a double, Correa had an RBI triple, while Nicole Nelson and Barlow also collected an RBI each.

Bates finally broke through with a four-run fifth. Senior Caroline Gattuso (North Reading, Mass.) opened up with a double to left center, followed by singles from first-year Anna Berenson (Topsfield, Mass.) and Lewis to fill the bases. Sophomore Molly Brown (South Dartmouth, Mass.) was thrown out at first, but Gattuso scored from third.

Freedman's RBI single put Bates runners on the corners before another single from first-year Karen Lockhart (East Greenwich, R.I.) scored the Bobcats' third of the inning. A Bowdoin error on the following batter allowed Bates to end the inning trailing 7-4. The Polar Bears added two more runs in the final frames, one of which coming off Gately's second home run of the game.

Bates faces Fisher on Tuesday in a pair of games starting at 3:30pm.
