CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Bates softball team lost 6-0 to Haverford Thursday morning before bouncing back to defeat North Central University 17-0 to begin the 2017 season at the National Training Center.

Bates (1-1) will take on Pitt.-Greensburg and the Coast Guard Academy Friday starting at 1:00 p.m.

RECAP: Haverford 6, Bates 0

Sophomore Andrea Russo tallied two hits and first-year Kirsten Pelletier allowed only one earned run in a complete game effort in the circle but Bates fell 6-0 to Haverford in an 8:00 a.m contest to begin the 2017 season on Thursday.

The Fords (2-4) got an outstanding performance from Kendall Chambers (2-2) in the circle, she tossed a complete game shutout, allowing only four hits, walking three and striking out four to get the win.

Haverford jumped out to the early lead in the top of the first inning. Back-to-back walks gave them runners at first and second with nobody out. Kaitlyn Guild singled in Rachel Wolfson for the lone earn run given up by Pelletier (Sidney, Maine) in the game.

One out later, a passed ball plated the second run of the inning for the Fords.

Russo (Cheshire, Conn.) led off the bottom of the first with a single and she proceeded to steal second base. But she got left stranded at second in the frame.

With one out in the third, Julia Blake doubled. A Bates error allowed her to score later in the inning.

The Bobcats had a good chance to score in the bottom of the third. Down 3-0, first-year Julia Panepinto (Buffalo, N.Y.) singled and stole second base. Russo followed with her second single of the game and advanced to second on the throw home, which held Panepinto at third.

But a strike out and a pop out ended the Bobcat threat.

A passed ball gave Haverford two in scoring position with two outs in the fifth. Ashley Sisto took advantage with a two-RBI single, extending their edge to 5-0.

Bates threatened again in the bottom of the sixth. With two outs, junior Tori Fitzgerald (Holliston, Mass.) tripled. Pelletier and junior Paige Ahlholm (North Andover, Mass.) drew back-to-back walks to load the bases. But a ground out ended the frame.

The third Bates error of the morning allowed Haverford to add an insurance run in the seventh.

Pelletier struck out five batters but also walked five in her collegiate debut.

RECAP: Bates 19, North Central University 0 (5 innings)

The Bobcats scored 13 runs in the second inning to run away from North Central University in their second game of their day and season on Thursday.

Sophomore Sam Fellers (Mendham, N.J.) tossed a one-hitter in the circle for the Bobcats (1-1) in the victory.

Russo set the table all day by scoring four runs at the top of the lineup, including two in the aforementioned second inning.

Head coach McKell Barnes was thrilled with the team's hitting. "We were making solid contact all game, getting hit after hit," said Barnes.

North Central's lone hit came on a single off the middle on a changeup as Fellers worked on her secondary stuff.

The Bobcats' 19 runs is the most they've scored in one game since they plated 22 at Fisher in 2012.
