Swim teams open NESCAC competition at Middlebury

Katelyn Drake '10 won the 100 and 200 backstroke events for the Bobcats.

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. -- The Bates College men's and women's swimming and diving teams competed at NESCAC rival Middlebury College on Sunday in their first conference meet of the season, with the host Panthers coming away with a 210-89 victory in the women's competition and a 230-57 win on the men's side.

The Bates women registered three event victories to highlight the meet for the Bobcats. Two of them were credited to junior All-American Katelyn Drake (Hudson, Ohio), who took first in the 100-yard backstroke, with a time of 1:00.86, as well as in the 200 back, at 2:11.44.

In addition, first-year Kara Leasure (Los Alamos, N.M.) won the 1,650-yard freestyle race with a time of 18:10.44, 0.58 seconds ahead of Middlebury junior Katie Soja.

Sophomore Charlotte Green (New Canaan, Conn.) also finished a close second in the 200 free, with a time of 1:57.87, just 0.21 seconds behind Alyssa Ha. First-year Emily Tato (Chatham, N.J.) was the runner-up in the 100 breast, at 1:15.58. And Drake was the runner-up in the 200 individual medley, at 2:19.15.

In the 3-meter diving, first-year Jessica Howard (Cumberland Foreside, Maine) edged out junior teammate Annaliese Rudis (North Andover, Mass.) for second place with 193.50 points.

On the men's side, among the highlights were a second-place performance by first-year Ben Horn (Southbury, Conn.) in the 100 back, with a time of 1:06.65. Bates' "B" team in the 200 medley relay team finished second, with senior Chris Berry (Augusta, Maine), Horn, first-year Ned Scott (Maplewood, N.J.) and first-year Matt Lipoff (Glencoe, Ill.) touching the wall in 1:43.10. The Bates "A" team placed second in the 200 freestyle relay, with Berry, first-year Tom Boniface (Youngstown, Ohio), first-year Nathaniel Depew (Hudson, Ohio) and Scott finishing in 1:30.30.

Bates next competes on Jan. 17, with Bowdoin visiting for the Bobcats' first home meet of the season.
