Swimming and diving sweep visiting Norwich, UNE









LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College men's and women's swimming and diving teams swept their home tri-meet on Saturday against visiting Norwich University and the University of New England. The host Bobcat men defeated Norwich 70-50 and UNE 79-35, while the Bates women beat Norwich 99-32 and UNE 88-48. Meanwhile the Norwich men topped UNE 97-22, while the UNE women outscored Norwich 98-22.

"I felt the team swam well after a tough training trip," said Bates head coach Peter Casares. "A few more weeks of hard training and they will surely be in the best shape of their lives."

Highlights for Bates included a national consideration score recorded by senior diver Annaliese Rudis (North Andover, Mass.) in the 1-meter diving event. Rudis scored 252.00 points.

The Bates women's swimming squad featured an outstanding 500-yard freestyle race by sophomore Kara Leasure (Los Alamos, N.M.), who won the event in 5:24.08.

The Bates men's efforts were highlighted by sophomore Dan Aupi's performance in the 100 back. Aupi (Branford, Conn.) touched the wall first in 54.91 seconds.

Event winners for the Bates women also included: sophomore Emily Tato (Chatham, N.J.) in the 1000 free (11:04.88); junior Charlotte Green (New Canaan, Conn.) in the 200 free (2:01.22), senior Sarah Reingold (Oakland, Calif.) in the 50 back (31.07) and 100 fly (1:04.44), first-year Jill Quinn (Andover, Mass.) in the 50 breast (33.93), senior Katelyn Drake (Hudson, Ohio) in the 100 free (56.68) and sophomore Carole Lupi (Branford, Conn.) in the 100 back (1:06.40).

Event winners for the Bates men also included: first-year Andrew Buehler (Kenilworth, Ill.) in the 1000 free (10:36.42), sophomore Tom Boniface (Youngstown, Ohio) in the 200 free (1:51.58), junior Peem Chatikavanij (Bangkok, Thailand) in the 50 breast (30.24), sophomore Ned Scott (Maplewood, N.J.) in the 100 fly (53.69), junior Pat Carroll (North Andover, Mass.) in the 50 free (22.84), sophomore Matt Lipoff (Glencoe, Ill.) in the 100 free (50.96) and sophomore Nathaniel Depew (Hudson, Ohio) in the 500 free (5:03.75).

Bates hosts its second meet in as many days on Sunday at 12 p.m., taking on NESCAC rival Middlebury at Tarbell Pool.
